Ugly Duckling is the playful neighborhood bakery and luncheonette from chefs Ilma Lopez and Damian Sansonetti — the award-winning duo behind Portland's Chaval. Here, they traded white tablecloths for house-made English muffins.
Why the Duck
Fine-dining chops, corner-bakery heart
Ilma is a nationally recognized pastry chef; Damian has cooked in some of the country's most celebrated kitchens. Together they run Chaval, one of Portland's best-known restaurants. Ugly Duckling is where they get to loosen up — a colorful, slightly weird, completely welcoming spot where the technique is serious and the vibe is not.
Everything starts from scratch: the English muffins, the pastries, the pickles, the sauces. And everyone — really, everyone — is welcome at the counter.
